Imagine walking into a dealership to design a car on a computer and have a giant printer build 3D printed car parts it on the spot? That’s fascinating, but still years in the future. However, the fully 3D printed car is already a reality. These are the coolest 10 models right now.
3D Printed Car #1: Shelby Cobra 56
Visited by President Obama at Detroit International Auto Show, the Shelby Cobra is a very special custom car. This 3D printed car was built by the US Department of Energy’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility. They used the Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) machine from Cincinnati Incorporated. This machine can 3D print huge, strong, lightweight composite parts without the need for tooling. It does this at speeds that are from 500 to 1000 times faster than a desktop 3D printer.
The 50-year-old iconic Shelby Cobra was also fitted with modern technology: a new engine, battery, and fuel cell technologies; hybrid system designs; and power electronics and wireless charging systems. Therefore, researchers could easily and quickly test out innovative ideas on this 3D printed car.
